first_imgOver the last week it seems that most of the details surrounding Motorola’s new flagship phone have come leaking out for the world to see. As a result, we now have a reasonably strong understanding of what this phone is and how it stacks up against the competition. From the professional photos taken of Eric Schmidt last week, we now know that the Moto X is roughly the same size as the Nexus 4. This suggests a screen size around 4.7-inches with a curved back similar to the HTC One. The bezel on the front of the phone leaves just enough room for the microphone, speaker, camera, and sensors, but little else. The back of the phone is removable, exposing the battery and LTE slot. The processor is expected to be a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro clocked at 1.7GHz with 2GB of RAM, which raises some interesting questions about the comment Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside made last month regarding the Moto X having two processors. The backplate is expected to come in many different colors and materials, in an attempt by Motorola to allow for a deep level of customization. The default options appear to be a matte plastic black or white. As for the different materials available for the backplate, wood is thought to be an option. Regardless of the backing you choose, the front half of the phone will likely always be a glossy black color with matching glass around the screen. The Moto X appears to be running a mostly vanilla version of Android. It will have several Motorola exclusive customizations, but it has never been confirmed that the phone will launch with either Android 4.2.2 or Android 4.3. Given the number of leaks we’ve seen for the next version of Android, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Moto X launch with the announcement of Android 4.3, but it really could go either way.The Rogers demo video for the Moto X that was leaked over the weekend shows that the phone offers some new voice and notification features, including an “always on” microphone that listens for your voice in much the same way that Google Now and Google Glass does. It has been reported that you’ll be able to set your own trigger phrase to wake this feature on your phone. There’s no notification light for the Moto X. Instead, the company has opted for a low power display option that displays the time and an icon for your notification in an almost E-Ink style presentation. This ghostly effect would almost surely cost more in battery life than a simple LED, but will also offer more information at a glance. One of the big points that has been touted so far regarding the Moto X has been battery life, and given all of the shiny new toys that sound like they would absolutely cost you battery life, it will be very interesting to see how Motorola plans to deliver on the promises that have been made so far.The camera for Moto X looks unique as well. The camera app can be launched by flicking your wrist twice while holding the phone, and the camera UI looks quite different from what we’ve seen in the past. Some reports are calling the new Moto X camera a “Clear Pixel Camera” that will allow for better low light and motion shots. Recently, the Motorola Twitter account posted a teaser that seemed to suggest that their next phone will feature the ability to take better photos with less blur than the current competition. It’s no 41MP Lumia 1020 for sure, but the idea of a new challenger in the smartphone camera fight with a different technology is exciting.Despite the wealth of leaked information, we’re still missing some pretty important specs. There’s been a lot of talk about special sensors on the Moto X that we’re still looking forward to seeing, and we still don’t have the all important price tag yet. Motorola is manufacturing this new flagship here in the US, and it’s clear that the entire company is eager to launch this phone soon. If Motorola is able to price it at $400 off contract like the Nexus 4, it would be an incredible feat. The Moto X is expected to be officially announced at the end of July, and barring any more incredible leaks we will have to wait until then to know all.
