first_imgGrowing up in small towns, I was enthralled by the cognitive ability of Bollywood producers/story writers and adored their stories around rich-girl-poor-boy-head over heels-rich dad’s goons threatening the hero-misunderstanding- love and marriage at the end. Or, the more common happy family-honest cop father-henchmen ravaging the house-kids separated only to unite after growing up – revenge – a happy ending.I was so mesmerized by the actions melodrama that I didn’t realize until I grew up that it was an overdose of truism and banal stories so much so that I wouldn’t be caught dead watching a movie of that genre even for gratis. There were, of course, the Sholays, Mughal-e-Azams, Deewars and Trishuls like movies that shot into instant popularity because of their class that pulled a rabbit out of a hat and surprised everyone by their sheer brilliance in all spheres. But they were only a very few given the mammoth rate at which Bollywood produced movies – second only to Hollywood in the world.Circa 2010s – this decade has witnessed an unprecedented spike in the quality of Hindi movies – be it the historical epics like Tanhaji, Padmavat or Manikarnika or tribute to unsung sportsmen like Paan Singh Tomar or the Hockey legend Sandeep Singh in Soorma or an insight into the current political and social hot potatoes like ‘Article 370’, ‘Ek Ladki ko Dekha’ and the very recent ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhaan’ taking up the issues of LTGB community that helped spread awareness and acceptability – an entire genre of movies that Bollywood can finally boast of.With the recent starry accomplishment, the time has come when Bollywood gets its due credit in the arena of the international cinema. Our performance at international film awards like The Oscars or The Cannes has been really dismal and the show has been largely confined to some of our divas sashaying their robes on the red carpet – the awards segment has largely remained big nought! But with these movies and many other pathbreaker films in making, I think the Indian file industry has finally come of age and we will surely win an Oscar at least in the foreign films category someday soon.last_img read more
